Run a Browser Check

There is a link to "Run a Browser Check" on the Vista Log In page. Click on this to make sure your browser is configured properly. (It just takes a second and may save you a lot of aggravation.)

•  Enable Java : Please use the Sun Mircrosystems Java Virtual Machine (JVM), not the Microsoft JVM. The minimum JVM WebCT will run on is 1.4.1, however 1.42 or higher is strongly recommended. Download Sun JVM. Switch to the Sun JVM by following the commands below:

•  Open the Windows Control Panel by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel . The Control Panel appears.

•  Locate and double-click Java Plug-in . The Java(TM) Plug-in Control Panel appears.

•  Click the Browser tab.

•  Under Settings , select the checkbox next to your browser.

•  Click Apply to save your settings.

•  Restart the browser.

•  Enable Javascript :

•  Select Tools then choose Internet Options . The Internet Options screen appears.

•  Select the Security tab.

•  Click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings screen appears.

•  Scroll down to Scripting , and enable Active Scripting and Scripting of Java Applets .

•  Click OK . The Internet Options screen appears.

•  Click OK .

•  Set Browser Cache :

•  Select Tools then choose Internet Options . The Internet Options screen appears.

•  Select the General tab.

•  Under Temporary Internet Files , select Settings . The Settings screen appears.

•  Select the Automatically radio button.

•  Click OK . The Internet Options screen appears.

•  Click OK .

•  Turn off Anonymous Logon :

•  Select Tools then choose Internet Options

•  Select the Security tab

•  Click the Custom Level button

•  Scroll down to the User Authentication settings

•  Under Logon select the Automatic logon only in Intranet zone radio button.

•  Click OK

•  Enable Cookies :

•  Select Tools then choose Internet Options

•  Select the Privacy tab

•  Enable Cookies:

•  If using a default setting, move the slider to select any of the following privacy settings:

• i. Medium High

• ii. Medium

• iii. Low

• iv. Accept all cookies

•  If using a custom setting:

• i. Click the Advanced button

• ii. Select Override automatic cookie handling

• iii. Select Always allow session cookies

• iv. Click OK to return to the Privacy Tab

•  Click Apply then OK

•  Turn off Pop-up Blockers : If a pop-up blocker is enabled, use of discussion postings, quiz windows, and download links will not work. Depending on the pop-up blocking software you are using, you may be able to set your WebCT server as an allowed site, or you may need to disable the pop-up blocker while using WebCT. Some browsers and security programs come with pop-up blockers, including Norton Internet Security 2003, AOL 8.0 and later, and Safari browsers. Again, disable the blocking software or set the WebCT server as an allowed site.

 

•  Enable Show Friendly HTTP Errors :

•  Select Tools then choose Internet Options

•  Select the Advanced tab

•  Select Show Friend HTTP Errors

•  Click Apply then OK
